Description: This video shows the inhumane conditions in one room in Pagani Detention Centre. In this one space live about 160 obviously young refugees, some of them have been there for over 100 days. Pagani has a capacity for 280 people, but right now, over 800 people, amongst them 300 minors, are crammed into the facility. They share one toilet in each room. Access to basic necessities is very restricted, medical aid is totally insufficient. On 18 August 2009, 160 minors started a hunger strike to fight for their immediate freedom. We supported their hunger strike today with a solidarity demonstration at the site and in the city of Mytiline. All detained refugees were shouting “freedom, freedom”. The video was subsequently picked up by international media and was broadcast on TV stations worldwide, playing a significant role in mounting pressure to shut down Pagani.

Description: Today, noborder activists and migrants recently released from Pagani and thus made homeless by the local authorities took to the harbour of Mytilini to demand from the authorities to shut down Pagani detention centre and provide appropriate support to the refugees. On the way to town, the boat of Frontex (European Border Agency) was attacked and chased away. The demonstration ended at the park next to the Prefecturate, which was squatted and turned into a branch of the noborder camp until the authorities give in to our demands.

Description: On the 20th of August, 150 people from a local solidarity movement and antiracist groups here to prepare the noborder camp took to the detention centre to show solidarity and support for their demand for immediate freedom. On arrival, the detained persons started shouting freedom, freedom, which was answered by the demonstration. Messages in English and Farsi were read out as the migrants inside passed letters with their demands and concerning their situation to the outside. All participants of the demonstration were severly shocked in the light of the unbearable conditions in Pagani. We learnt of a 13-year-old boy inside Pagani who was extremely sick and in urgent need of medical attention for two days already. However, none of the authorities responsible acted. It was only when we called an ambulance it was possible to transport the sick boy to the hospital. We also learnt of a heavily pregnant woman in a very bad health state. She however refused to be brought to the hospital since she didnt want to leave her other two little children alone in Pagani. We left with the promise to come back soon and to spread the information about these obvious human rights abuses worldwide and went to the city to confront the attorney responsible with his neglect in taking care of the minors he is in charge of.

Description: On the 31st of August 2009, at 10 oclock in the morning, ten noborder activists from Austria, Sweden, Spain, France, Czech Republik, Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany occupied the roof of the refugee jail in Pagani. With this action, we are increasing the pressure to finally get Pagani closed. The activists state: “During the noborder camp, we were able to witness the brutal consequences of the European border regime here in Lesvos. A ship employed by the European border agency Frontex is hunting refugee boats, the Greek coast guard and the Navy do the dirty work. Human lifes dont count. Those who manage to come to the island alive are sent to the refugee jail in Pagani: permanently more than full, the jail in Pagani reminds us of conditions we rather know from Libya or Marocco. We are outraged about this blatant bleach of Greek and international law.” The activists demand the closure of Pagani, papers for everybody and the abolition of Frontex and the Dublin-II treaty.

About w2eu

This is the blog of the antiracist network Welcome to Europe. It was formerly known as lesvos09.antira.info.

The name Welcome to Europe expresses the discontent and anger we feel when looking at the fatal realities of the European external border: the long documented deaths and suffering have continued for years, and no end is in sight. We stand for a grassroots movement that embraces migration and wants to create a Europe of hospitality.

We maintain our focus on the European external border in Greece, but will not limit ourselves to that geographical area. The right of freely roaming the globe has to be fought for everywhere. Join us!
